How to choose a spray gun for walls and ceilings? First, you need to decide what they are and what their main differences are. It is also important to identify for yourself the main works in which you will use the tool before choosing.

How to choose the right spray gun for painting walls

It's one thing if you are going to use the device to paint the fence at home, but it's quite another thing when you plan to use the tool for professional work all the time. Therefore, to decide which spray gun to choose, you must first consider their modifications.

The main types of spray guns can be divided into two classes: electric and pneumatic.

Electric models

Such sprayers are also called airless since they do not use air. The principle of their operation is to supply paint under pressure using a built-in piston pump. They differ in engine power, brand, and paint capacity. There are two versions of their execution: manual and outdoor.

The disadvantages of electric spray guns for the home include a low percentage of paint transfer to the paint coating, most of it settles in the form of fog around the product. As a result, there is overspending of paint. Because of this, professionals practically do not use electric spray guns. But they are convenient for domestic use. With their help, you can paint various products very quickly and accurately.

An excellent example is a German company, Wagner. In its green line of household tools, it produces several models of spray guns. The simplest model is called Wagner 0518080.

Only a few companies produce floor spray guns. According to their technical parameters, they are already closer to pneumatic tools. But such devices can be used for professional purposes. They have a more powerful motor and have a set of different adjustments. A typical representative of such models is the world-famous Wagner company. It specializes in the production of paint and varnish equipment. It produces some of the best spray guns.

Pneumatic models

Before choosing a pneumatic tool, you first need to decide what kind of compressor you have available. The tool will not work without it. The most important characteristics of the compressor for choosing a spray gun are:

  • The maximum capacity of the compressor expressed in liters per minute;
  • Maximum pressure measured in atmospheres;
  • The volume of the receiver is expressed in liters.

Without knowing these parameters, it is impossible to start choosing, since they are all important. But if you miscalculate when buying a spray gun for the house, and it will consume more air than the compressor gives out, this will lead to the fact that the device will spit paint or you will constantly have to wait until the air is pumped into the receiver.

Pneumatic spray guns can be divided into several types, depending on their operating principles. To understand how to choose a spray gun correctly, let's look at the main ones.

The main types of pneumatic spray guns

HP— high pressure: The most common construction. Due to the high pressure, the spray gun consumes less air volume, and the painting process is fast. But the disadvantages of such a product include a large overspend of paint. This is due to the high pressure of the jet from the nozzle, as a result of which the particles of the solution when painting the house simply ricochet off the surface of the working product and settle in the form of fog on the surrounding objects.

HVLP- this abbreviation stands for low pressure and high volume. But unlike the previous version, this design is more practical, due to the fact that the pressure at the outlet of the nozzle of the spray gun is small. As a result, the percentage of ricochet paint particles from the painted product is much less. Accordingly, there is a saving of paint. Such a low-pressure spray gun requires a fairly powerful compressor since it consumes a lot of air.

LVLP is a literal abbreviation for low pressure and small volume. This type of spray gun appeared relatively recently. Their advantage is a small percentage of paint loss. It also does not require such a large volume of air from the compressor, as with the previous version. That is, using a tool of this design, you can seriously save on paint and the accompanying compressor. But it should be borne in mind that the tool of this design is quite expensive. To date, it is believed that such spray guns are the best among all their counterparts.

There are other types of spray guns, their principle of operation is based on the recombination of the methods that we discussed above.

How does the choice of tool depend on the paint used

An important point when choosing a tool is which paint for the spray gun will be used. For each type of coloring composition, there are their own optimal tool options. For example, it is undesirable to use an electric spray gun for whitewashing, since lime contributes to the destruction of rubber seals on the device.

The spray gun for acrylic paint should have a nozzle with a diameter of 1.4 mm. But many manufacturers supply their own tool with the ability to select and replace nozzles for the sprayer. This is very convenient, since then there is no need to purchase different tools for different types of paint.

Water-based paint has its own requirements. Its peculiarity is that it dries very quickly (within two hours) and contains various fractions in its composition. Therefore, it is recommended to use nozzles with a diameter of at least 2 mm for such paint, since otherwise various particles can clog the outlet.

For more information about this, see the table:

Nozzle diameter

Coloring composition

1.4 mm

Stain

1.4-1.5 mm

Acrylic paints

1.5-1.7 mm

Primers and varnishes

1.7-2 mm

Liquid putty

2-2. 5 mm

Water-soluble primers and varnishes for external use

Tips for using

After finishing the work, thoroughly clean the tool from traces of paint, since in the future, when using the spray gun, the remaining paint particles clog the nozzle.

It is advisable to purchase sprayers made of aluminum housing with an anti-corrosion coating since many paints contain solvents in their composition and this leads to premature wear of parts.

Especially your attention should be paid to the quality of gaskets. But it is desirable that they are made of Teflon.

Which electric spray gun is better to buy for your home?

You can perform various painting works without attracting hired labor, if there are electric spray guns for painting the house, working from the 220V network. After all, such models are suitable for private use, while professionals purchase expensive pneumatic equipment.

But people who do not have experience in choosing such a powerful tool often do not know which electric spray gun is better to buy for use at home. After all, there are budget models, and there are more expensive famous brands.

How to properly approach the choice of a spray gun

Let's find out what to pay attention to when choosing.

How to choose an electric spray gun for home use?

It is important that the purchased power tool is multifunctional – the spray gun meets these requirements since it is used for various paints in composition and density.

Since repair and painting work in the house is not done so often, and the area of the painted surface is relatively small, there is no need to purchase a spray gun with a large tank. It is enough that they have a capacity of 1-2 liters, otherwise it will be difficult to work with it. It is better to choose a paint container made of stainless steel since it is easier to wash it than plastic, although the second one has one advantage-thanks to the transparent walls; it is easy to control the paint consumption.

The body of the spray gun itself should be reliable, preferably made of coated aluminum. But plastic, although it will be cheaper, will not last long. It is important to pay attention to the gaskets available in the device since the tightness of the device depends on its quality. It is better if they are Teflon.

If an electric spray gun is purchased for painting the ceiling, it is convenient if the tank is located on top of the device, since the lower one sometimes implies only working in a horizontal position.

For water-based paint, as well as for wood varnish, the same electric spray gun can be used. The difference in operation will be only in the diameter of the nozzle. After all, a large spray torch is needed for a water-based emulsion and much less for a varnish. In cheap models, it is not possible to adjust this parameter, and inexpensive models, the size can be changed depending on the solution. By the way, the nozzle itself is better metal (stainless steel, aluminum), but plastic is disposable.
